Do Hair Supplements Really Work—or Are They Just Expensive Protein?

A 25-year hair-industry perspective on which supplements are worth it, which aren't, and how to tell the difference for yourself.

After 25 years in the hair industry, I understand the skepticism around hair supplements. Most of them lean on keratin, collagen, or some other protein — so are you actually supporting hair, or just buying very expensive protein powder in capsule form?

The honest answer: it depends on the cause of the problem, the specific formulation, and the evidence behind it. Some supplements genuinely help. Others are attractive packaging, underdosed ingredients, and a story that outruns the science.

What actually happens when you swallow keratin or collagen

Hair is mostly keratin, so it's an intuitive ingredient to reach for. But swallowing keratin doesn't mean it travels intact to your scalp and becomes hair. Like any dietary protein, it's broken down during digestion into peptides and amino acids, and your body distributes those according to its own priorities — not exclusively to your follicles.

That's why ordinary protein powder shouldn't be treated as a targeted hair product. Hydrolyzed proteins are a real step up: they've already been broken into smaller, water-soluble peptides, which measurably improves absorption. But easier absorption still isn't the same as proof of a hair outcome — the product still needs a real dose and real human evidence behind it.

When nutritional support can actually make sense

Hair-producing cells need an adequate supply of calories, protein, vitamins, and minerals. If someone is genuinely deficient in iron, zinc, biotin, or protein, correcting that deficiency can improve hair growth — this is well documented in the dermatology literature, not just supplement-industry talking points.

The American Academy of Dermatology specifically recommends confirming a deficiency exists before supplementing with individual nutrients like iron, zinc, or biotin — more isn't automatically better, and excess vitamin A or selenium can actually worsen hair loss.

Nutritional support tends to be relevant when hair issues connect to:

  • A confirmed nutrient deficiency
  • Inadequate protein or calorie intake, or a highly restrictive diet
  • Recovery from illness, surgery, or a major physical stressor
  • Shedding that many women experience in the months following childbirth
  • Hair fragility and breakage rather than a growth problem

It's far less likely to help when the real driver is an untreated medical condition, a medication side effect, or an infection — those need medical attention first, with nutrition as a supporting player at most.

Ingredient research is not the same as finished-product proof

This is where I think most of the industry — including brands like mine — needs to be more careful.

One ingredient Beneganic uses is Cynatine HNS®, a hydrolyzed, water-soluble keratin. The real evidence here is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial: 50 women took a formula with 500 mg of Cynatine keratin plus vitamins and minerals for 90 days, and the results showed statistically significant improvement in measured hair and nail parameters versus placebo.

That's a genuine, controlled human trial — but its limits matter. It tested one keratin-based formula in 50 women over 90 days; it didn't test every finished product that happens to contain keratin, and it shouldn't be read as a guarantee for any individual.

The same caution applies to laboratory research on botanical extracts. An ingredient that affects follicle cells in a petri dish is legitimate, interesting science — it is not the same as proving a finished oral supplement changes outcomes in actual people.

Why anecdotes aren't the same as evidence

Every supplement brand, mine included, accumulates individual stories from happy customers over time. They're worth listening to, and they're part of why people end up believing in a product. But an individual account can't rule out other explanations — the body's own recovery after an illness or stressor, a change made at the same time, or simple variation between people — and a single photo or timeline can't establish cause and effect the way a controlled study can. Treat any brand's customer stories, including ours, as a reason to look closer at the actual evidence, not as a substitute for it.

Hair health is more than protein

A credible supplement should do more than add a trendy protein to a capsule. Before trusting any formula — including ours — I'd want to know:

  1. Are all active ingredients and their exact amounts disclosed, with no hidden "proprietary blend"?
  2. Do the doses match what was actually used in human research?
  3. Was the finished product studied, or only one ingredient in isolation?
  4. Were results measured in people, or only in lab cell cultures?
  5. How large and how long was the study?
  6. Are contraindications, allergens, and pregnancy guidance specific to the actual formula?
  7. Does the company promise realistic support, or guaranteed results?

"Natural," "clinically tested," and "doctor-formulated" are marketing words, not evidence — they should never replace asking these seven questions directly.

How to compare formats and approaches, category by category

Rather than picking a winner between broad categories, it's more useful to compare within the category you're actually choosing between:

  • Gummies vs. capsules: gummies are easier to take but often use lower, less-standardized doses to keep the taste and texture workable — check the actual milligram amounts, not just the format.
  • Single-ingredient vs. multi-nutrient formulas: a single ingredient like biotin only helps if you're actually deficient in it; a broader formula addresses more potential gaps but should still disclose each dose individually.
  • Proprietary blends vs. disclosed doses: a "proprietary blend" hides exactly how much of anything you're getting — a real red flag regardless of brand.
  • Topical cosmetics vs. ingestible supplements: a topical product works on the hair and scalp surface; an ingestible product relies on the bloodstream to reach the follicle. They're solving different parts of the picture and aren't a straightforward apples-to-apples comparison.

A safety note worth repeating

High-dose biotin — a staple of "hair, skin, and nails" supplements — can interfere with certain medical lab tests, including some troponin tests used to evaluate a possible heart attack. If you take a biotin-containing supplement, tell your doctor and the lab before testing.

The verdict: helpful supplement, or expensive protein?

A hair supplement is worth considering when:

  • It targets a genuine, identifiable nutritional need
  • Its active ingredients are dosed transparently, at amounts that match human research
  • Real human evidence supports the specific formulation, not just a single ingredient in a lab
  • You use it consistently for a realistic period — three to six months at minimum

It's probably just expensive protein when:

  • The formula is an underdosed collagen or keratin blend with no disclosed amounts
  • The company won't say what dose is actually inside
  • You already get adequate protein and nutrients from your diet
  • The marketing leans entirely on testimonials and before/after photos

Hair supplements are neither miracles nor automatically worthless — they're tools, and a tool only works when it fits the actual problem. The most trustworthy answer isn't "everyone needs this." It's: check the formula, look at the evidence, and know when nutrition is only one part of the picture. And if something about your hair feels sudden, severe, or accompanied by other symptoms, that's a conversation for a doctor before it's a shopping decision.

A note on the evidence

Research on hair supplements is generally smaller in scale and shorter in duration than pharmaceutical drug trials. An individual ingredient study — even a well-run one — doesn't automatically prove that a finished, multi-ingredient product will produce the same result for every reader, and results will vary from person to person.
