What Ingredients Should I Look For in a Hair Supplement?
If you've spent any time reading hair supplement labels, you've probably noticed they all start to blur together. Biotin, collagen, keratin, saw palmetto, vitamin D, zinc, some kind of "clinically proven" extract — nearly every product on the shelf uses some combination of the same fifteen or twenty ingredients.
After 25 years in the hair industry — running extension and hair-replacement businesses before I became the US lead for Beneganic — I've learned that the ingredient list is the least useful part of the label. What actually separates a serious product from a pretty bottle is three things: the form the ingredient is in, the dose, and the evidence behind that specific dose and form. A supplement can list the "right" ingredients and still be worthless if any one of those three is wrong.
Here's what I actually look for, ingredient by ingredient.
Structural protein: keratin and collagen, but check the form
Hair is roughly 90% keratin, so it's an obvious ingredient to reach for. But swallowing keratin doesn't mean intact keratin travels to your scalp and becomes hair. Like any dietary protein, it gets broken down during digestion into peptides and amino acids, which your body distributes according to its own priorities — not exclusively to your follicles.
That's why the form matters. Hydrolyzed keratin and collagen have already been broken into smaller, water-soluble peptides before you take them, which makes them easier to absorb intact as peptides rather than raw protein. A 2024 randomized crossover study found that bioactive peptides from hydrolyzed collagen were measurably absorbed into the bloodstream in healthy adults, and a separate 12-week trial of an oral hydrolyzed collagen supplement reported improvements in skin and scalp/hair condition compared to baseline.
Beneganic's formulas use Cynatine HNS®, a patented hydrolyzed, water-soluble keratin. The relevant human evidence here is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial: 50 women took a formula containing 500 mg of Cynatine keratin plus vitamins and minerals for 90 days, and researchers reported statistically significant improvements in measured hair and nail parameters compared with placebo. That's a real, controlled trial — but it's worth being precise about what it proves: it tested a keratin-based formula, not every finished retail product that happens to contain keratin, and results from one 90-day trial in 50 women shouldn't be read as a guarantee for every user.
What to check on the label: is the protein specifically identified as hydrolyzed, and is there a named, dosed ingredient (like Cynatine HNS®) rather than just "keratin" or "collagen" with no amount given?
Vitamins and minerals: the form matters as much as the presence
Almost every hair supplement lists vitamin D, iron, zinc, and biotin. Fewer people ask what form those nutrients are in, and that's actually where a lot of quality gets decided.
Cheap formulations often use synthetic vitamin forms (like synthetic folic acid or thiamine mononitrate) and inorganic mineral salts (like iron II sulfate) because they're inexpensive to manufacture. Beneganic's approach is to use plant-sourced vitamins (vitamin D from lichen, iron from curry leaves, vitamin C from amla) and organically bound minerals instead. I think this is a real advantage, but I want to be precise about why, because two specific safety points get overstated in a lot of marketing — including some of ours if we're not careful:
- Vitamin A in high doses is a documented cause of liver toxicity — this is well established in clinical literature on hypervitaminosis A, not a fringe claim. - Calcium supplements have been linked to increased cardiovascular risk in more than one meta-analysis, most notably work associated with Ian Reid and Mark Bolland's research group — though the evidence isn't unanimous, and some researchers have pushed back on the strength of that link. It's a genuinely debated area, not a settled 30%-risk-across-the-board fact, and I'd rather say that honestly than overstate it. The honest takeaway isn't "synthetic bad, plant-derived good" as a blanket rule — it's that dose and form both affect safety, and a product that discloses neither is asking you to trust it blind.
What to check on the label: are doses listed as a percentage of a sensible daily value rather than a huge multiple of it, and does the brand name the actual form of each vitamin and mineral rather than just the vitamin's name?
Targeted botanical actives — and knowing which evidence tier they're on
This is where labels get the most overconfident. Grape seed extract (OPC), saw palmetto, curcumin, and similar botanicals show up constantly, often next to an impressive-sounding percentage.
Take grape seed extract: the claim that it can increase hair root cell division has real research behind it — but that research is in vitro, meaning it was done on cells in a lab dish, not in a clinical trial on living people taking a capsule. That's legitimate, interesting science, and it's part of why Beneganic includes high-dose Chardonnay grape seed extract in our 20-Day Intensive Hair Care cure. It is not the same thing as a human trial proving that the finished product produces that same effect, and any brand — including mine — should say so plainly rather than blur the two together.
Saw palmetto is another one worth understanding on its own terms rather than by comparison. In our formulas, it's included as a botanical traditionally used to support scalp and hair health. If you see a brand — including mine, in earlier copy — lean on a specific hormonal mechanism or compare a botanical directly to a named prescription medication, treat that as a cue to ask what was actually studied. A botanical's traditional use and a controlled clinical trial against a prescription drug are two very different kinds of evidence, and it matters which one you're actually being sold.
What to check on the label: does the brand tell you whether an ingredient's evidence comes from human trials, animal studies, or lab/cell-culture research? If a page only says "clinically shown," ask what, exactly, was tested — the finished product, or one ingredient in isolation.
What else the label should tell you
Ingredients are only half the story. Before I'd recommend any hair supplement — Beneganic included — I want to see:
- Exact amounts, not a "proprietary blend" that hides how much of anything you're actually getting.
- A named source and manufacturing standard. Beneganic is manufactured to pharmaceutical GMP standards and is gluten-free, lactose-free, GMO-free, and Clean Label (no synthetic fillers) — that kind of specificity is what you should expect from any brand, not just ours.
- Allergen and pregnancy guidance that's specific to the actual formula, not a generic disclaimer. A brand that can't tell you which of its own products fall into which category hasn't done its homework.
- A realistic timeline, not a promise of visible results in days. Hair grows about 1 cm a month, and it takes at least two weeks for a newly stimulated hair to travel from the root to the surface — three months of consistent use is a fair minimum before judging whether any ingredient combination is working for you.
Red flags that tell you to keep looking
Regardless of brand, be skeptical of a label or landing page that promises:
- Guaranteed regrowth, or that it "works for every type of hair loss"
- Reviving hair in an area with scarring or long-dead follicles
- Dramatic visible growth in days
- "No side effects for anyone"
- Superiority over a prescription treatment, backed only by a cell-culture study
- "Clinically proven" claims with no study you can actually look up
Where this leaves Beneganic

A note on the evidence
Nutritional-supplement research is generally smaller in scale and shorter in duration than pharmaceutical drug trials, and the calcium/cardiovascular question in particular remains genuinely debated among researchers rather than settled. Individual ingredient studies — even good ones — don't automatically prove that a finished multi-ingredient product will produce the same result for every reader, and results will vary from person to person.
